The Old Bakery

On a heavily restricted mixed use historic site within a conservation area the project provided twenty new apartments across a pair of converted mid nineteenth century period properties and a 4 story new build rear development incorporating a full site basement dig, sympathetic traditional brick detailing and a green roof maximizing the sites potential with a near 100% built area.

We were interested in the site’s historic use as a bakery and aimed to deliver a building that references the site’s heritage as a Bakery. In the process of baking, the dough is placed into a bread tin. As the dough cooks, the tin restrains the shape and the bread rises to form an arched top as it pushes up and out of the tin. At Deptford Broadway, the site is the tin; the building the dough; and the bricks the CO2 bubbles rising up. A simple coast effective twist to the brickwork added interest and a visual narrative back to the sites former use.
